A twenty nine year old male, we will call Jake, called the ARC from the streets of Worcester.
A twenty nine year old male, we will call Jake, called the ARC from the streets of Worcester. Suffering from the vicious cycle of alcoholic and drug addiction, Jake said he would do anything if we could help him get and stay sober. Jake had lost his job due to his addiction, and shortly thereafter, his apartment.
After obtaining Jake’s health insurance number, information about him personally, and demographic information, the trained staff at the ARC immediately started making calls to find Jake the right match for long term treatment. Within 24 hours, Jake was picked up and headed to treatment. As he was hanging up the phone with ARC staff after learning a ride was on its way to get him off the streets and into treatment, Jake said “ I can’t believe it. Thank you so much. You have just saved me. I know it. And my Mom thanks you too!”
“I need help” we heard a voice say over the phone.
“I need help” we heard a voice say over the phone. He was homeless and couch surfing, staying with a friend in Connecticut. He explained that he was on heroin and couldn’t do it anymore.
His family wasn’t speaking to him and he was exhausted and scared. He had MassHealth and requested that we help get him a bed in a detox. Where he was a state away, we had to get creative.
The detoxing process had already begun and he was very ill, we knew that we had to act fast because withdrawals can easily cause relapses.
We hired a taxi for him and when the cab pulled up to the house he was sitting on the front steps and exclaimed “You did it! My ride!”
Three weeks later, he called from a long term residential treatment home to thank us! We were so happy!
